Word Work Wednesday

I know it's 10:55 BUT it's still Wednesday right?  So...here's a little word work and since it's poetry month let's start with a poem.  This is great for inferring.  If you leave off the title and cover the last two words you can have all kinds of fun trying to guess who has a house like this!

SNAIL
It hasn't any windows
It hasn't any doors
Although it has a ceiling
It hasn't any floors
'Twas built without a builder
A hammer or a nail
Because you see this funny house
Belongs to Mr. Snail.

Word Work Wednesday

I know some of you have already had Spring Break (lucky) but I'm counting down the days over here!  We all have a bad case of spring fever.  In honor of spring, here's a little buggy word work for you.  There is a sorting sheet and cards for each vowel.  The kids draw cards and add a dot to the ladybug that has the same sound as their word.  It can also be played as a game.  Have partners choose a bug and take turns drawing cards.  If the word matches their bug they can put a dot on and see who had the most dots to win.  You can use lots of things for the dots.  I like to use flat glass beads and I always keep a tub of them on hand for markers.  Gotta love the Dollar Tree!  Of course if it's a really buggy day I will break out the chocolate chips (that I might or might not take a handful of).  Sometimes you just need some chocolate.  Can I get an amen?  Click the pic to download the whole set.  Happy Spring!

Word Work Wednesday

I worked with my little readers on sneaky e.
We worked and worked and worked.

I worked with my little readers on the rainbow rule.
We worked and worked and worked.

Everything seemed to be going so well...
then we put the words together and - oh my!

Some of them had such a hard time getting their mouth to say what their head knew about these rules!  So I thought it would be fun to make a little snowman.  In this game the kids have to look at the word, decide which rule to use, and read the word.  If the word matches their rule they get to draw a part of their snowman.  The first one to have their snowman "built" wins.

We played it whole group first, team Rainbow against team Sneaky E.  It was a tough battle.  It came down to the last button and team Rainbow was victorious.  We had a lot of fun playing together and now they should be ready to play with a partner!

Word Work Wednesday

Well...it's not too chilly in my neck of the woods but it is January so I went with penguins for word work today.  Maybe all this talk about ice will bring some flurries our way and not pollen.  Yes, you heard right,  pollen! That's what Bonnie over at Living a Wonderful Life saw on her car the other day!  Can you believe it?  Check it out on her super cute blog.

Here's a word work activity for soft c sounds.  I used the glass pebbles from the dollar store for my "ice."  The kiddos can play by themselves with one side of the board or two players can sit across from each other.

Word Work Wednesday

Some days you just need a little chocolate...and it never hurts to add a few marshmallows.  Just in case you are having one of those days here's a couple warm and delicious word work activities.

Have your kiddos read and sort their word cards onto the correct mug.  If you are really feeling crazy you can throw some real marshmallows in the mix!  If you do that, have them read the word and add a real marshmallow to the matching mug.

If there is a word sort you'd like that's not here leave me a comment and let me know what you need.  Maybe I can whip it up for you!

I'm headed to find a mug, some marshmallows, and a nice warm fire to sit by!

Word Work Wednesday

Finally we get the vowel sounds down - the short vowels - the long vowels - and then it happens.  Bossy R comes along.  Now those vowel sounds we were so sure about are not the same!  This always seems to cause my students to *stall* so I'm taking the bull by the horns car by the steering wheel to help them practice and master these sounds.  Since we will have to *park* here for a while I thought it might be fun to burn a little rubber while we're at it!

Click on the link below to download your parking lot, directions, and bossy r word cards.  Now all you need is a Hot Wheel from the bottom of the toy box and you're ready to roll.  I know.  I know.  The car puns were a bit much but I couldn't help myself.  I'll try to hit the brakes next time.
Really I will.
